＜経歴＞

大学後、イベント会社に入社。
退職後バックパッカーとして世界各地を旅を続け音楽プロダクション会社勤務し電通関西支社企画開発部に契約社員として入社。テレビ番組制作、博覧会パビリオンプロディース、大型スポーツイベント立ち上げ、音楽イベント運営などを多数企画しサポートする。

電通退職後、日本で初めてのアウトドア専門の通信社である「アウトドア情報センター」を創業。アウトドアコンテンツの収集のためアメリアやヨーロッパ、南太平洋、オーストラリアなど世界各国のアウトドアアクティビティを取材し集めたコンテンツを多くの新聞や雑誌、テレビ・ラジオなどマスコミにリリース。
スポーツニッポン、大阪新聞、毎日新聞、阪急電鉄広報誌TOKK、BOBSKY（学研）などでの連載をする。
阪急電鉄初のアウトドア雑誌（丸ごと自然遊び/阪急出版）の監修や執筆をする。

2004年日本で始めてのバーベキューの教科書「BBQHACKS」(徳間書店)を出版。
また、アウトドア番組「テクテク気分!」（テレビ大阪）でのメインMCやテレビやラジオ番組のスピーカーとして多数出演多数。FM番組での(エフエム大阪)でのDJ経験もあり。

2006年、日本にも海外に負けない本物のバーベキュー文化を作り出すという目的で日本初のバーベキュー協会となる「日本バーベキュー協会」を立ち上げる。

翌年2007年にはスマートバーベキューとバーベキュー文化を学ぶ「バーベキュー検定」をスタート。
バーベキュー検定の合格者を日本バーベキュー協会公認バーベキューインストラクターとして公認する制度を始める。
2026年現在、下城が講師を務めるバーベキュー検定を受講た公認バーベキューインストラクター数は32000名を越えている。

バーベキュー検定が日本資格検定協会により2023年度の最も注目される検定資格第3位に選ばれる。

バーベキュー体験から実学を学ぶ実践的な食育プログラム
「キッズバーベキュー楽校」の開催、阪神淡路 大震災の被災経験者として経験から「防災士」(NPO法人日本防災士機構)の資格も取得。
防災士の立場から防災減災。震災後のクオリティライフ作りをテーマにした「防災バーベキュー」も全国各地にて開催。
2009年より2018年まで同志社女子大学の嘱託講師として新しいものを作り出すための仕組みと学ぶ「プロデュース論」を教える。

都市公園の新モデルである「防災オフグリッドバーベキューパーク」
や東京富士大学キャンパスにて周辺住民及び企業と学生つなぐを「キャンパスバーベキュープロジェクト」のスタート。
JHからの依頼にて高速道路のサービスエリアでの「ハイウェーバーベキューパー ク」を試験的に設置。全国にスマートなバーベキュースポットの提案を各方面に続けている。

福井県高浜町、高知県に四万十市にてバーベキューでの町おこしプログラム開催。
バーベキューで地域起こしを目指し「スマートバーベキュー革命ロードマップ」の提案や「ご当地バーベ キュー100選」の選定及び発表を続けている。

また2010年より世界的に広がってきた競技バーベキュー（Cook sportsとも呼ばれる）の分野に進出。
アジアで唯一のInternational BBQcooking Teamである「BBQSHOGUN」を日本で編成し全米各州やオーストラリアで開催されているバーベキュー世界選手権へ出場しアジアチーム初の入賞。

世界一のバーベキューチャンピオンとなったタフィー・ストーンを祝福

BBQSHOGUNチームブース（ミズーリ州カンザスシティ）

チームの名を冠した「BBQSHOGUN」ブランドのバーベキューソースやバーベキュースパイスを国内外に発売開始。年間1万本販売。

SCAの公式REPとして国内予選をスタートしSCA ASIAの初海外活動として、2025年韓国にてSCA STEAK COOKOFF 韓国にて開催。

Career History

It all began with bird hunting (which was legal at the time) on Mount Rokko with his father, a bird lover (whose hobby was appreciating the song of the Japanese White-eye). During elementary school, he joined a youth group where he gained nature experience, and the Kansai region’s seas and mountains (primarily Mount Rokko) became his main playgrounds for outdoor activities.

In junior high school, he became obsessed with bicycles and began cycling trips while camping in a camper van loaded with heavy tents and other gear.

During his student years, he enjoyed mountain climbing (low mountains) and windsurfing. Even after entering the workforce, he found time—including during job changes—to travel as a backpacker to various parts of the world, including China, India, Nepal, Tibet, and Thailand.

After working at an event company and a music production firm, he joined the Dentsu Kansai Branch’s Radio and Television Division as a contract employee, spending his days as a salaryman. At Dentsu, he provided planning and production support for television programs and major sporting events.

After leaving the company, he drew on his outdoor hobby experiences to establish Japan’s first outdoor-specialized news agency, the “Outdoor Information Center.” He traveled to various locations around the world—including U.S. states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, New Caledonia, Borneo, Australia, and Fiji—to cover outdoor spots and activities both domestically and internationally. He then began a business providing content tailored to various media formats—such as television, newspapers, radio, and magazines—to mass media outlets.

He wrote serialized columns for Sports Nippon’s “Outdoor Life in the Ecological Age,” the Osaka Shimbun’s “Outdoor Fun,” and Hankyu Railway’s public relations magazine “TOKK,” and served as a supervisor and contributor for outdoor feature articles in the Mainichi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun, as well as for the quarterly outdoor magazine *Marugoto Shizen Asobi BOOK* (Hankyu Publishing).

He served as the main host of the outdoor program “Teku Teku Kibun!” (TV Osaka) and made numerous appearances as a speaker on TV and radio shows such as “Detective Night Scoop” (ABC) and “Good Morning Asahi” (ABC). He also gained experience as a part-time DJ at FM Osaka.

Through his overseas reporting, he learned about the latest trends in barbecuing and realized how far behind Japan was in this area. To introduce advanced barbecuing techniques to Japan, he founded the “Japan Barbecue Association” in 2006.

In 2007, he launched the “Barbecue Certification” program to teach about barbecue cultures around the world. The number of participants has exceeded 22,000 in Japan and overseas (as of 2023). Among the participants are many celebrities, including barbecue comedian Takeda Barbecue, musicians Yuzu and Aki Hoshino, Morning Musume, the members of Kanjani∞, Morisanchu, and Samaz.

Since 2005, he has served as a full-time instructor for the “Analog Thinking in the Digital Age” course at the WAO! Internet Vocational School, and from 2008 to 2018, he served as a part-time lecturer at Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts, teaching a “Production Theory” course under the theme “Giving Shape to Ideas.”

He launched the Japan Barbecue Association’s original food education program for children, “Kids Barbecue School.”

He conducts hands-on programs throughout the country.

Drawing on his own experience as a survivor of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, he obtained certification as a Disaster Prevention Specialist (Japan Disaster Prevention Specialist Organization) and launched “Disaster Prevention Barbecue” and “Disaster Prevention Camp” programs.

He is also actively involved in community revitalization efforts that use barbecues to revitalize people, places, and things.
